Strachan rules out bid for Barton

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has rubbished reports that he is lining up a swoop for Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton this summer.

Barton's tumultuous spell at City seems almost certain to come to an end in the close season after he was suspended by the club following a training-ground altercation with team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

But speaking after Celtic's final SPL game of the season against Hibernian, Strachan denied he was planning to make a bid for the player.

He said: "It's just a lie."

Everton and Newcastle are still thought to be leading the race for Barton, who has a ?5.5million buyout clause in his City contract.

But Roma, Hamburg and Atletico Madrid are also rumoured to be in the hunt for the England international, who could be tempted to leave the Premiership in a bid to resurrect his career.

New Hertha Berlin signing Jaroslav Drobny has revealed that he rejected the chance to join Celtic.

The Czech goalkeeper secured a move to Hertha from Bochum earlier this week, putting pen-to-paper on a three-year year deal.

He announced that he had also had offers from Greece, and has now claimed that Celtic were also keen.

"Celtic were interested, but the discussions with Dieter Hoeness were without problems, that is why I decided for Hertha," Drobny told CTK.

    Artur on the move then??

GORDON STRACHAN is the new name in the frame to become Manchester City manager, writes NEIL CUSTIS.

Strachan and Blackburn boss Mark Hughes are top of the wanted list for those advising Thaksin Shinawatra ? the former Thai Prime Minister, whose ?108million takeover bid for the Eastlands outfit is the one favoured by the City board.

Celtic chief Strachan, 50, is on a one-year rolling contract at Parkhead so would have no problem leaving the club. He is also understood to be keen on the move back to the Premiership.

Shinawatra?s advisers are desperately trying to steer him away from appointing former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri.
And Strachan ? who led Southampton to the 2003 FA Cup final and Celtic to two Scottish titles ? is seen as the right man to get the most out of Shinawatra?s promised ?50m transfer kitty.

.....slow day in the suns sports room then!!! lmfao

Celtic are moving for Spartak Moscow midfielder Mozart.

The Brazil international is ready to leave Russia this summer and his agent, Dario Canovi, confirmed that Celtic are on the brink of a deal for the ex-Reggina man.

"At this moment, the club that is showing the most serious interest is Celtic," said Canovi. "They want to place him alongside (Shunsuke) Nakamura.

"This is a move that I am happy with, even though I'd prefer to bring him back to Italy"

    Michael Owen?

Heard from a few ppl last night that Celtic were being linked with a shock move for Michael Owen. I don't think for a minute that it's going to happen, but wondered if anyone else heard anything, where did you hear it and what were the details etc.

Had a look around and Kerrydale are also talking about a deal in the ?8-?10 Million mark. Don't see it myself, I'd be wary of his fitness to handle the SPL.

Also talk of Kadlec allowing his contract to expire and move to Celtic in the future.

Appiah will be Celtic's fourth deal

Gordon Strachan's hit-list looks set to be completed before the pre-season begins as he continues to move quickly for his targets.

Chris Killen is the most recent, Scott McDonald signed up in January and Scott Brown joined between the two, completing a hat-trick of shrewd signings.

It now seems likely that Neil Lennon's immediate replacement will be Fernebache's Stephen Appiah. The 26-year-old is believed to be at an advanced stage in discussions with Celtic.

The Ghanaian captain is most often seen as a combative midfielder, although he is capable in attack also (perhaps in a similar way to Scotty Brown). The price tag would likely be in the region of £3million, which would probably give Celtic enough space for another signing at a similar price.

Really hope the Appiah deal comes off, reckon he'd be a cracking signing!
