Celts looking at Dutch 'wonderkid'
Celtic are tracking a young Dutch striker who is being hailed as the next Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, according to reports in the press. FC Utrecht forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel has been watched by Celtic’s scouts several times in recent weeks and the Hoops could look to swoop for the striker in the January transfer window.
Tony Mowbray’s side have struggled to hit the net on occasion this season, particularly in Europe and signing one of the hottest prospects in Dutch football could give his side a boost in the new year. However, the Holland Under-21 striker could command a large chunk of Mowbray’s January budget unless he offloads some of his current squad.
Van Wolfswinkel netted a hat-trick against Poland Under-21s just two weeks ago to underline his status as the latest in a long line of Dutch hitmen and is already attracting the attention of other clubs. Bolton are also rumoured to be tracking the young star and several clubs in Holland have already made enquiries, including Feyenoord.
The forward only joined Utrecht in the summer after coming through the highly respected Vitesse youth academy. Though bigger clubs in the Eredivisie made offers then, van Wolfswinkel was keen to ensure first-team football. However, the striker’s start to the season, with four league goals to add to his international goals, have made him more likely to challenge for a starting spot at bigger clubs.
