When news first broke across the city of Glasgow that Rangers duo Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor had been axed from both international and domestic football, the Celtic supporters must have thought the title was in the bag. Every paper in the UK and even the broadsheets around the globe carried the story, reporting the facts and the the fiction. Great debate raged among the intellectuals of regional radio phone-ins. The pundits and the punters were having a field day. Big Derek Johnstone had inside info, but didn't see it was his place to disclose to the nation that there was indeed more to this story than we were getting. Ranger supporters were divided. It's been obvious to many that Ferguson has given the club the last of any telling contribution. As for McGregor, it's a pity he looks for inspiration from the likes of Ferguson as I think if he took the example of guys like David Weir, I'm sure he'd go far as I don't doubt the fact he is a very good goalkeeper.
The facts are still getting twisted and I feel obliged to put a few things straight. Many supporters and the media are still hinting at the fact there were other players involved in the hotel "booze-up", notably Celtic's Scott Brown. If that's the case then he should have faced the same punishment the SFA handed out to the Rangers duo. What is less than clear is the actions of Rangers were not entirely to do with the players actions at the hotel, it was a direct consequence of the players hand gestures to the Scottish media and international supporters. At this time the SFA have stated the players will not be considered for international selection and Rangers have fined the players and handed down a two week suspension. The media and punters may be reporting the duo have played their last game for Rangers, but that has never been suggested by the club. It's a common opinion that the club are using this situation as an easy route to get two big earners off the wage bill and get some much needed funds into the debt ridden club. Now this may be the case, but we still have had no official statement for the club that both players have kicked their last ball at Ibrox.
So! its' in the bag! Rangers are in meltdown and the title is Celtic's to throw away...Don't Be Fooled. Put aside the troubles across the city and lets focus on our own club. Celtic are a team going nowhere, and at an alarming pace. This is a squad that has but a handful of players I consider worthy of pulling on the Hoops. Don't be fooled with the three-in-a-row statistics, a Boys Brigade team could challenge for the SPL title given the dire excuse for football that every team is offering up in recent years.
Lets not get distracted into thinking we can look to Rangers to implode and hand us the title, it won't happen! They will be there or there abouts come the last day of the season. What Celtic need to concentrate on is whether they will still be in the hunt with them. We need to forget about what's going on at Rangers and get our team playing football worthy on winning this title on merit, nothing else!
