Exactly two weeks to the day that Gordon Strachan called time on his Celtic career, the board look to have got their man. Well sort of...
It is widely expected that Tony Mowbary will take over the reigns today or tomorrow bringing with him assistant Mark Venus and ex Celt Peter Grant. But as the news filters through with articles such as "Celtic get their man" I have to take those headlines with a pinch of salt. To say that the search for Celtic's new manager has been efficient would be like saying Sir Fred Goodwin done a great job at RBS. The approaches, the denials, the quotes that never were, the moans, the groans, the aw naw not that diddy and the oh aye I'd take him. The fact of the matter is Celtic unlike their 2 previous appointments were as discreet as a bull in a china shop.
Owen Coyle was first up, he became hot favourite whilst he was standing at the dugout in Wembley leading his team to an unlikely Premiership conquest. He was approached, wait no he wasn't actually he might have been. Whilst this was going on the Celtic fans weren't exactly over awed by the calibre of manager being linked with the once sought after hot seat. Then it was Martinez which I can categorically say was approached, but Celtic never got by the Swansea Chairman and his inflated compensation package. So once Coyle ruled himself out of a job he was never approached for and Martinez shot off to the Premiership, Celtic had to think again. Well I say think but really they scrolled down to the next person on the list, you know the one between Martinez and Mark McGhee. Yes, you guessed it....
Tony Mowbary aka Mogga.
Whilst I want to stress that this is not a horrible appointment by the board it has to be said that it is hardly an inspired one either. Mogga has shown himself to be a good manager who wants his teams to play football. This was evident last season with West Brom who did get relegated but they done it in such a way that the Baggies fans were chanting their managers name the day they were condemned to the Championship. They appreciated what he had tried to do. Now he will try and bring his football ethic to Celtic Park while the Celtic world watches.
I do believe he can be a successful Celtic Manager if given the proper backing. So when the white smoke finally goes up. I hope the rest of the Celtic family will join me in saying welcome to the new manager and give him our full support.
