So we pick up the pieces of a Champions league adventure ending prematurely. Was this really ever to be? First it was Dynamo Moscow, one of the toughest games we could have got from the pot. Somehow after a home defeat we pull it out the bag in Russia and break our away day hoodoo. Maybe even then the most pessimistic of tims would have thought, hey! We are going to get to the group stages. Yes, there were some tough teams in the draw, but we were unanimous in saying anyone but Arsenal. So we all know what happened next, out came Arsenal and as I picked myself off my office floor I was cursing our luck.
Our luck can’t get any worse than this! But I was wrong. We all have seen many great teams come to Celtic park and fall at the hands of the Celtic team and the Celtic fans. So we were braced for another great night quietly confident we could pull off another shock in Europe. Kick Off came, Walk on was sung loud and proud, the atmosphere was electric, but this did not translate onto the pitch.
As the first half wore on we could see Arsenal were very neat in terms of passing and holding the ball but one thing was very evident, there was no cutting edge. You could say the same about the Celtic team but on the night, it wasn’t an outstanding display from an Arsenal team full of talent. Instead the win and the goals came from something their TV money couldn’t buy…LUCK.
We were struck by the cruellest of blows when a Cesc Fabregas free kick hit off the back of William Gallas as he was trying to get out the way of it. You couldn’t make this stuff up, but then to add insult to injury Mr Caldwell managed to score his second goal against Celtic in European competitions to all but seal our fate.
Knowing our luck in the returning leg Scott McDonald will blast the Arsenal crossbar only for the ball to bounce up the other end of the field and chip Boruc. This season still promises to be a good one if Tony Mowbray gets it right, we will be able to bring home some trophies which is something I don’t think our English visitors can say. As the Celtic fans told them. You are gonna win fcuk all!
