    Old Firm Games to Savour

After watching a great Manchester Derby at the weekend it got me thinking about what my favourite Old Firm derby games. I went for games I was at personally and can still remember the emotions of the day. So here are MY top 5:

Celtic 6 -2 Rangers - First old firm game under O'Neill, Rangers psychological hold over Celtic was brought to an abrupt end. Celtic went on a scoring spree, with Chris Sutton, Stan Petrov, Paul Lambert and the man himself Henrik Larsson getting on the score sheet. Which included ‘That Chip’ against Klos. As the commentator said at the time “This is the stuff that Celtic dreams are made of” and indeed it was. This was also to signal one of the biggest knee jerk reactions in Scottish football history when the Rangers board sanctioned the 12million pound transfer of Tore Andre Flo to appease the Rangers fans. Although Celtic were to lose the next Old Firm game at Ibrox 5-1 that didn’t stop the inevitable Treble from materialising.

Celtic 1-0 Rangers - The day Celtic completed the Whitewash over Rangers. Although they had already been well and truly beaten to the league title the Rangers fans were in full voice near the end of the match, where’s your whitewash gone was the chant. Enter Chris Sutton, with just 2 minutes left on the clock he shrugged of a Rangers defender to chip an advancing Klos who was left to stare at the ball as it landed in the net. Celtic Park erupted! Rangers were left dejected which by now was a familiar feeling for the club.

Celtic 2-1 Rangers - After taking the lead with a Naka Spectacular, Novo equalised. When another Naka shot was goal bound Carlos Cuellar made a spectacular save on the line and was sent off for his troubles. Celtic missed the resulting penalty and looked to have lost the league BUT up steps Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to nod the ball home deep into extra time, one of the best moments I have witnessed at Parkhead. Celtic as you know went onto clinch the League.

Celtic 2-0 Rangers – CIS CUP FINAL 2009 – Celtic hadn’t won a Cup Final against Rangers in a long time. Rangers were looking to keep that run going but that wasn’t going to happen. The game ended 0-0 so extra time was needed. It was an unlikely hero in Darren O’Dea who headed home the vital first goal in the first half of extra time. He couldn’t hide his excitement as he gave Rangers that sinking feeling. Late in the game McGeady would convert a penalty to condemn Rangers to defeat.

Celtic 5-1 Rangers - The last game that springs to my mind is this one. Although this game came in the less trophy laden years it was still a game I look back on with a smile. Lubo was debuting in his first Old Firm game which didn’t seem to daunt the little magician as he scored 2. Larsson would score 2 this game and an up and coming youngster Mark Burchill rounded off the rout. I was a young lad at the time and was my first real experience of skelping the Rangers.

Please let us know your favourite Old Firm games and tell us why they stick out in your mind.

Remember Grant getting sent off for charging out of the wall twice at the same free kick

I had the privilege to attend that game - my first Old Firm, and at Legoland! Murdo MacLeod special, Willie McStay sent off and supposedly the game where The Huns did their Edinburgh cousins a favour to guarantee the league. Someone forgot to tell them that 10 games remained and Davie Hay`s Hoops racked up a straight 10 victories, culminating in Love Street, May 1985. We felt we lost everything that day but what a precious point it proved to be!...........Cue my favourite song..... Twas a saturday in May, 1985.............................................. .God bless Albert Kidd!

    palm sunday humiliation

I was at the double header in 1991, league and cup victories on consecutive sundays - the st. patrick's day massacre and the palm sunday humiliation. I seem to remember huns getting sent off in both games with a celt also red carded to 'even things out'. I'm sure iean feerrgussun was one of the huns involved.
I was also in the celtic section of the main stand at ibrox for the 4-4 draw in '86(remember that? we used to get the broomloan, an entire standing enclosure and a quarter of the old stand! They couldnae sell all their tickets).
My abiding memories of this game are Murdo's leveller and willie mcstay kicking kevin (ted) mcminn high into the air right in front of the celtic enclosure. Willie got a red card as well as the loudest cheer of the day.
We were back at ibrox a couple of months later for a glasgow cup final- which we lost- but we had just snatched the league so we didn't care and it was our first chance to yell our variation of souness at the new hun boss. P*nis P*nis.

2-0 to us at ibrox with collins scoring a decent free kick and mcstay belting one in off the foot of the post. think it was 94 or 95. dunno why it sticks in mind.
