Celtic Board are set for a meeting in the next few days and what a massive meeting it could turn out to be.
After last night’s overdue victory against Rangers has it been enough for Neil Lennon to get the job on a full time basis. I think, yes!
While there will be many fans who will bang the “he's got no experience” drum, I don't believe that experience necessarily guarantees success. We only have to look at Tony Mowbray and even Paul LeGuen at Rangers to see that the job is too big for some people regardless of how many years they have had in the dugout. We also forget that Neil Lennon up until he was thrown onto centre stage was quietly going about his business doing his coaching badges and being an influence behind the scenes with Strachan and Mowbray.
When Lennon was given the job on a short term basis I thought it was the right thing to do at the time on the assumption we would be taking our time to pick the right man for the job. Well it turns out he very well could be the man for the job. Passion can only get you so far and Lennon knows that, I have been impressed with his handling of the press and even more so last night when Walter Smith launched a scathing attack on Andreas Hinkel. After the Rangers boss had commented on the Celtic players attitude over the past 2 seasons Neil Lennon snapped back “That's not Walter's place. He's not the Celtic manager and not affiliated with the club.
"Those comments would be best left for someone at the club to say.
"Did I not make my views quite clear after Ross County? It was my place and I said it at the time.
"I asked the boys to prove me wrong and we've set about doing that. But I don't comment on Rangers and never have.
"Not as a manager anyway - I think I've been quite gracious towards Rangers and the way they've dealt with things and their mentality this season.
"It's not Walter's place to criticise the Celtic players. He should leave that to people such as myself."
All credit to Lennon who could have easily sparked a war of words with Smith. He seems to be progressing game by game just like this team, who only 7 short weeks ago couldn't buy a win against the SPL minnows St Mirren. He even overcame the Ross County debacle that looked to end his chances of the job, Celtic have came along way in that time and now the board must sit down quite quickly and decide if they are going to give him the hot seat on a permanent basis. I hope they do.
In the mean time I think I will sit back today in work with a smile on my face knowing we salvaged some pride back last night and sent a message to Rangers for next season.
