Celtic today were counting the cost of another season with no league title.
They will now have to negotiate through both Champions league qualifiers as an unseeded team with the likes of Zenit St Petersburg, Ajax, Fenerbahce or Dinamo Kiev waiting in their first qualifier. Even if they do manage the first qualifier they will be met by teams like Tottenham, Werder Bremen and Seville which could prove too much for a transitional Celtic.
This is another sobering fact for the Celtic board to take in after a very disappointing season. Peter Lawwell felt the need to release a letter to the Celtic faithful via the clubs official site after the dismal season apologising. Mr Lawwell obviously worried that the stay away fans from last season will just choose not to put their hands in their pockets this time around.
Many Celtic fans just seen this as an empty gesture and have challenged Mr Lawwell not to talk a good game but show real intent in the weeks and months ahead to ensure the club has a succesful future.
One thing is certain, any success next season will be achieved domestically as these qualifiers are no doubt a step too far.
