While the World Cup finally sprung to life over the weekend it was all business at Celtic Park which saw two defenders join the ranks in as many days.
Charlie Mulgrew and Du Ri, "The human weapon" were both signed up to get Lenny's thunder making under way. Hardly a big roar of thunder, and in actual fact there is probably more noise coming from the new Celtic vuvezelas than from these signings. But it is a step in the right direction.
Celtic had no recognised left back before the re-signing of Mulgrew and the defence as a whole was pitiful last season. That is why Neil Lennon has decided to build from the back, the very best way to go about things. This week he hopes to hear from a list of transfer targets who are mulling over a switch to Parkhead.
Sol Campbell is one of them, a man Lennon has wanted from the very beginning and would be very disappointed to lose out on now. When speaking on Friday Lennon remained hopeful of a deal.
Then there is Jimmy Bullard, a man who has all the attributes that Celtic lacked last season. Undoubtedly talented, he has the ability to drive a team forward and is a tremendous character to have in the dressing room. A fully fit Bullard is definitely a mouth watering prospect and if he does sign and stay fit then he will be a valuable asset.
We again hear this morning that the Joe Ledley deal is far from dead, another free transfer coup if Lennon can pull it off.
Yes these are all IF's at the moment but things should become a lot clearer after this week. It's getting to the point when players want their future sorted so they can prepare for the new season.
New season, new manager, new players. Is it time for a new captain?
Watching Scott Brown last season I was left uninspired by his ability on the pitch and his ability to drive the team on as leader. Yes, it was a bad season for most players but in my opinion the midfielder hasn't shown enough to warrant a starting place in the team never mind having the captaincy.
He was made captain by former boss Tony Mowbray during his failed term as manager.
I am not going to slate the bhoy too much, he is frustrating to watch more than anything else. Everyone knows he has the attributes to be a success but he fails to show it week in week out. Maybe the burden of captaincy is too much for him at the moment. Neil Lennon could do him a massive favour by taking that pressure off him and let him focus on his game.
For me the captain has to lead by example, and rally the team when things aren't going their way. (and dare I say they need a bit of the old clenched fist air punching that gets us off our seats).
With a Champions league qualifier looming these decisions need to be made sooner rather than later.
